Different Ways to Preserve the Bounty

There are several fashionable methods used by food preservers to store up on a seasons bounty. In this article I will address these briefly in order to acquaint you with what is currently at your disposal. Prior to selecting your particular method, you would be wise to determine the kind of canning or preserving which you plan to accomplish. Not all methods are suitable for everyone while we encounter some people who display a natural tendency to successfully accomplish all methods. Let's now turn our attention to the ways by which we can store our foods. These methods range from canning, dehydrating, freezing, pickling or smoking. Each method provides you with a feasible opportunity to preserve your food but only you can determine which would serve your needs the best.

Canning is likely the most popular of all the methods we will discuss and it simply involves processing your foods at an extremely high temperature rate. Canning involves storing your food in jars of various sizes such as pints or quarts. This process actively destroys any organisms which can cause your food to be destroyed or which will make you ill. As the jars are processed a vacuum seal is created which prevents air from entering the jars and creating contaminated contents. There are two types of canning which can be accomplished, these are raw packed or hot packed. Raw packed canning involves those foods which are placed in the jars uncooked while the hot pack method involves foods that are cooked prior to being placed into their containers.

Another popular method of preserving foods is pickling. This is a process which is generally used for preserving foods such as fruits or vegetables, relishes, chutney, sauerkraut and pickles.

Making various flavors of jams and jellies represents yet another all time favorite method of preserving your popular fruits. These include such foods as jams, jellies, honey and preserves. Also included in this group are the various types of butters and even fruit syrup.

Freezing is a modern favorite that has been credited with working well with fruits, vegetables, poultry, meat, seafood and nuts. This has never been one of my favorite methods as there is too much of a chance for the foods to spoil in the event of a power outage.

Dehydrating is my personal choice for a food preserving style. I have concluded that there is basically no food available that can not be successfully dried. Several popular types of dehydrated foods include fruits, vegetables, herbs, leathers and jerky.

Lastly, we come to smoking. This is a process that is a rarely used method to preserve fish, poultry or certain types of meat. My goal is to learn more about this method in the near future.
