The DREAM Act Launch

A hot topic of debate, immigration, is recently buzzing in with news reports from the nation's capital. The presidential administration is in the works to help illegal immigrants by granting the right to live and work within the U.S., without fear of deportation. If they moved at a young age they may stay in the country with or without legal action having been taken against them previously.

"The Obama Administration will kick off one of the most sweeping changes in immigration policy in decades Wednesday, allowing an estimated 1.7 million young undocumented immigrants to apply for the temporary right to live and work openly in the United States without fear of deportation," The Washington Post reported yesterday.

The Department of Homeland Security is now accepting applications for the working permits. The new freedom from fear of deportation, and the openness of being handed documentation, like passports, will leave many with a smile on their faces outside consulates.

Democrats are ahead in passing this bill. The Huffington Post reported that Obama has been a firm supporter, while Republicans tried to block it in the Senate, back in December 2010, "The Democratic-led House approved the DREAM Act - the acronym stands for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors... " The process has been ongoing and is only beginning to make a bit of headway with the Dream Act.

Nevada's Sen. Dean Heller proposed in 2010 that the DREAM Act is "a Band-Aid solution that will not solve the larger problem." Since then officials are taking a different side to this previous proposition, now a reform.

A whopping estimate of about 90 percent of Latino voters already voiced their approval in April, according to The Huffington Post. On whichever side one might argue, either for or against such a large change, there are certain predicaments in place for those who would like to apply for such a right. There are some strict requirements.

The specific requirements for those interested are as follows: they must be between the ages of 15 to 31, before they were 16 they must have been in residence for the past five years, they must also either be enrolled in high school or graduated with their diploma or GED, have some college education or have served in the U.S Military, as well as have no criminal record.

It has been reported how certain documents are allowed, in accordance with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, in order to show proof of permanent residence. This includes but is not limited to tax receipts for the older individuals, and school transcripts, or achievements for the younger ones.

The Tampa Bay Times reported last June that this business was problematic to U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio. He was not quick to offer an alternative to the Press, which has been giving much attention to his reaction. Rubio has been bashing the bill's details on many occasions, calling it a 'Chain Migration'.

Ironically, his family had received such freedom a previous generation. He does however give examples to a reporter in an interview how he hopes young individuals, such as those like an example he makes mention of, a top-of-the-class student in Florida, deserve to be given an opportunity to study in the U.S. somehow.

These individuals have been state-side so long they cannot consider anywhere else home.

CNN has reported six days ago that others in politics are not as supportive either, as the big contender, "presidential nominee Mitt Romney has said he would veto the DREAM Act as president."

It is questionable how this might impact unemployment further, while the numbers of newly documented people will be at a new large estimate. Nonetheless, many students of different ages in U.S. schools across the states are hoping this will be their ticket that opens up opportunities towards their hopes and aspirations for professional advancement.
